CALENDAR UPDATE
Because the Canton Association of Business and Industries believes in the importance of health and fitness, CABI organized its monthly roundtable meeting around the theme The Art of Living Well.
Hosted by Orchard Cove, a premier continuing care retirement community,
the breakfast supplied an abundance of good food and hearty advice.
“We take a leadership role in making health a priority for our members and for the community,” said Paul Hannigan, Executive Director of CABI, a nonprofit corporation that works to make Canton a better community by creating a bridge of understanding among its citizens, local government and businesses.
Paul Hollings, Executive Director of Orchard Cove, introduced the speakers whose concerns were not only the elders in Canton, but also the school children and everyone in between.
First up was the fitness director at Orchard Cove, Susan Flashner-Fineman, who emphasized that exercise plays a key role in heart and bone health. She discussed the nutrition classes that are available for older adults both at Orchard Cove and through the Council on Aging. “Awareness and education help you get the information you need to make healthy choices.”
Next to speak was Martha Lawless, Director of Food Services in Canton for the last six years. “We’re working hard to improve nutrition,” she said, explaining that the schools offer whole grains, trays of vegetables, salads, and every variety of fresh fruit. “We give children a lot of choices.” She pays particular attention to sodium content and portion size, and considers childhood obesity a challenge that she’s willing to tackle through Michelle Obama’s incentive program: Let’s Move. She recommended that parents check out the school menu on line.
Fuzion Sports Club associate Alex Costa, emphasized that fitness takes planning and practice to manage. Membership comes with access to the Fuzion Meal Planner, an on line site that helps in the planning, preparation, and enjoyment of delicious, healthy meals. “We want to be the gym where you stay motivated.”
Wellness Coach Kathryn Kelly rounded out the line-up with a motivating speech about leading one’s own life and doing what’s best for you as an individual. In a group exercise, she asked all to write down their strengths and values, then to form a statement of action. “If you have your life goal in mind, then you have a better emotional life.”
The ever-gracious Hannigan, whom Barbara Selwyn, Director of Marketing for Orchard Cove and co-organizer of the event, praised as “providing added value to people’s experiences,” concluded the meeting by presenting speakers with a Certificate of Appreciation and welcoming new CABI members, the Blue Hills Country Club Daniel Hall and The Salvation Army Ruth Blais.
Hannigan reminded the community about upcoming CABI events: the Golf Tournament on June 21, and the Canton Homecoming Road Race in September.25th.

| Canton Association of Business and Industries HOLDS ANNUAL HOLIDAY GATHERING AT REEBOK
The recent holiday party held by the Canton Association of Business and Industries (CABI) at Reebok International gave an impressive array of local high-profile professionals in business, public service, education, politics and other fields a great opportunity to chat and get re-acquainted or meet for the first time.
The festive gathering attended by approximately 125 people also allowed CABI’s leadership to express sincere thanks to the Town of Canton and to particular individuals, as well as mention a key initiative for the future.

Among the notable guests were Selectmen Robert Burr Jr., Vice Chair Avril Elkort, and Clerk Sal Salvatori Jr., State Rep. William Galvin, Norfolk District Attorney William Keating, Fire Chief Thomas Ronayne, Police Chief Ken Berkowitz, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. John D’Auria.
CABI President Howard Jay Goldman told the crowd that “We all have a lot to be grateful for,” including the fact that Canton has created a very hospitable climate for business. He also noted CABI’s desire to help increase recognition of businesses in the retail community, thus encouraging residents to keep their money in the Town. Goldman said more details will be available as the project takes shape.
He mentioned that CABI looks forward to giving money back to Canton, which they have done successfully yet again. Goldman announced that in 2008, through activities such as the 4th Annual Reebok Homecoming Road Race held in September, which had 486 registered participants, CABI raised over $56,000, and of that amount, over $33,000 will go back to the community.
He thanked several companies for their generous support – Reebok, Pepsi Bottling Group, One Beacon Insurance, and Computershare. Reebok “has always been there for us,” Goldman said, specifically citing CFO Joseph Keane, who is a CABI board member and Mary Ellen Carney, who works with him.

Keane was on a business trip and was thus unable to be at the party. Filling in for him was former Reebok Community Liaison Executive Paul Foster, who gratefully accepted a stunning crystal urn on Reebok’s behalf for being the Corporate Road Race winner.
Certificates of appreciation went to the following individuals: Ed Gilmore, who along with his colleagues, coordinated the collection and distribution of toys to needy families; (I NEED THE NAMES AND TITLES OF THE OTHER RECIPIENTS AND WHY THEY WERE HONORED).
Nancy White and Nick Maffeo of the CABI donation committee awarded grants to the Fire Department for equipment that will stabilize vehicles involved in rollover accidents so that people can be safely extricated from them, and to the Police Department to fund its K9 program. Chiefs Ronayne and Berkowitz, respectively, accepted with words of heartfelt appreciation to CABI.
Roger Pritzker of the CABI donation committee announced that three businesses have submitted applications to join CABI, including FM Generator, Triad Advertising, and National Resource Management.
Goldman concluded the formal portion of the evening by thanking CABI Executive Director Paul Hannigan for being the group’s liaison with the community and doing such an effective job.
Despite the current economic downturn that has dramatically affected Massachusetts and the nation, Goldman exhorted the audience to be optimistic. “Let’s all think positive for next year!”, he urged them. |
